3 Cr J. McCluggag'e was not present at yesterday’s meeting of tile Wliangaraomona , County. Council, Cr McCutchan explaining that he was at present indisposed in Wellington.

At the Christchurch Hospital Board to-day, Dr Eenwiqk, presented a re-, port for infantile paralysis, stating That the disease was in a mild form, ‘and that there/had; lieen two recoveries, which were the first recorded. Dr. Yalintine said 40 cases had occurred in Dunedin, 30 in Christchurch, .and reports from Taranaki suggested that the epidemic was there. A peculiar fact was that' the disease attacked many adults, but a good feature was the recoveries. Dr. Fenwick urged that the spread of [the disease to the North Island suggested the probability of another epidemic next autumn.—P.A.

The recent scene at the Stratford County Council’s last meeting was mentioned shortly at yesterday’s meeting of the AVhangamomona County Council. Cr Coyne said he had seon it reported that the statement had been made at the Stratford meeting that foremen were in- the habit of engaging labor without consulting anybody. He hoped' the same principle did not apply in the AVhangamomona County. He thought veither the riding members or the Engineer should be consulted in the matter. The Engineer (Mr E. C Robinson) said that in the Stratford County no casual labor was employed without him being consulted. Cr Coyne reiterated that he had seen the statement reported in the press. The Engineer ; The statement was made and was reported in the press, but it is not correct.

The following are the rates on newspapers addressed to the United States of America : —For each newspaper Id for the first -4ozs and id for each additional 2oz or fraction thereof. The rates also apply generally to newspapers which are not printed and published in New Zealand.
