Renter's St. Petersburg correspondent cables that a hurricane in the Kuban Province caused the Sea ■ of Azof! to rise 9ft. and inundate Stanitza and Achyyrskaji. A thousand people perished. Two hundred workmen were drowned while asleep. Three hundred and eighty "buildings at Achy-
yrskaji were swept away. There were also floods at Yascnkija, and 150 persons were drowned.
The Sea of Azov, the ancient Pains Maeotis, is an inland sea of Asiatic Russia on the confines of Tartary. I* communicates with the Black Sea by a narrow channel. It is about 235 miles long and 110 miles at its broadest part. The soundings generally show a depth of from 35 to 40 feet. It. is, therefore, not very deep, but over it is transported a great portion of the produce of Siberia, which is sent down the River Don, which runs into the Sea of Azov at its northern extremity. At the mouth of the Don stands the fortified town, of Azov, which has lost much of its former importance through the harbor becoming silted up.
