The first appearance of a gun for use against aircraft by the British fleet is to be made by the Iron Duke which is going to the manoeuvres to test two guns throwing a 121 b highly explosive shell. The effective range is 7000 yards. It is deemed possible that even if the object is not hit, the explosion may be sufficient to bring down the aeroplane. The Iron Duke is also introducing a six-inch anti-torpedo battery. The newest battleships are dispensing with the torpedo defence net known as the crinoline, because it was easily. penetrated by the latest torpedoes, and thus useless and obsolete. The jack tars will 001/ regret the change, because “out nets” is an unpopular order, involving a laborious task. ■
