Several jewellers and diamond merchants received visits from Mr Bowker, who was accompanied by two friends, and at each place visited it : was Mr Bowker who gave his name and acted as spokesman. Having stated his business Mr Bowker un- : buttoned a thick winter overcoat and i then a lounge jacket, and, diving his : hand into his waistcoat pocket, pro- ! duced a dirty wash-leather hag. From this he took a roll of cotton wool i which, on being unrolled, disclosed jan uncut' diamond weighing 1/8' ■ carats. Mr Bowker explained that lie had found this wonderful stone in the dry diggings on .the Vaal River a few miles from Kimberley, and decided to market the lind in London. That is why he is walking about London with a diamond nearly as large as the Koh-i-Xoor in his waistcoat pocket. He is not disclosing the price at which lie values Jus find. He is simply asking for offers. Several big dealers in Hatton Garden have declined to make any offer at all. They want to hear Mr Bowker’s own price first, hut just at present Mr Bowker is not disclosing his opinion in pounds, shillings and pence of Ids diamond.
