Mr Alfred Deakin has been appointed President of the Commission representing Australia at the Panama Exposition.—P. A.

Messrs. W. McAsey (Matau), W. McL. Kennedy, W. Hallett, and H. A. McLeod (Tahora), and W. Sandison (Xiho Niho), have been appointed Justices of the Peace.

Mr W. H. D. Bell, member for Wellington Suburbs, does not intend to seek re-election. A Press Association message adds that the decision is due to pressure of private business.

The following have passed the New Plymouth teachers' examination for certificates held in January :—Class C : Olive Curtis, R. D. Mcßae, and Mary Stephens. Class D: Elizabeth Aitehisoh, Alice Cocker, Gladys Doile, G. C. Harre, Susan McCormack, A. D. Mcßae, Gwendoline Rawlinson, R. R. Robinson, Elma Wallach, and A. A. Watkin.

Mr W. F. Gordon, who is retiring from his position in the New Plymouth Lands and Survey Department after 41 years' service, was on Friday afternoon made the recipient of a handsome timepiece at the hands of his fellow officers. The News states that Mr G. H. Bullard, Commissioner of Crown Lands, made the presentation, accompanying it by a few well-chosen remarks. Mr Lowe, chief draughtsman, in a short speech, testified to Mr Gordon's zeal and efficiency. Mr Follet Carrington conveyed the good wishes of himself and Mr W. H. Skinner, Commissioner of Crown Lands at Blenheim, to Mr Gordon. The recipient suitably responded, referring to his long and pleasant connection with the office.
