SUNDRY SPORTS.
SWIMMING. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The committee of the Stratford Swimming Club met last night. The secretary presented a rough balance-sheet of the recent carnival, which showed a good credit, balance. Votes of thanks were passed to those who had made donations to the Club’s funds, to Mrs Abraham for much appreciated help in looking after lady competitors, to the Electrical Supply Co. and its staff for work done in connection with the lighting of the bath, to-the members of lie orchestra, to Mr and Mrs Kivell for invaluable help in a number of directions, to the Dairy Factory Co. for milk supplied for supper, and to all those who, not being members of the Club, rendered service as officials.
The question of the narrowness of the baths was fully discussed, the committee being unanimous that swimming sports will be far more successful if the bath is widened. It was decided that a deputation consisting of Messrs W. P. Kirkwood (president), Spratt, Whittington, Kelly and Templer wait on the School Committee at its March meeting to urge the work being done. It was decided to hold another evening carnival on March JStli. In the absence of the Club’s handicapper, Messrs Dewar and Lister were appointed bandicappers. Champion Cup races were fixed as follows Heats 100yds, February 2oth, final, March 2nd; heats 220yds, March 9th, final March 11th. A team is to be sent to the Hawera carnival on Thursday evening, and the polo team is to meet for practice at the bath this evening and to-mor-row evening. The committee decided that polo practice he held every Monday and Thursday evening. The committee meets .ygain on March 4th. CHAMPIONSHIP CARNIVAL. / The only Taranaki man vo get on the prize-list at the New Zealand championship meeting at Blenheim seems to be Laing, of Imrlewoocf, who was placed second in the 150yds Interclub Handicap. The 440yds. championship resulted as follows:—M. Champion (holder, Auckland) 1, A. Sinton (Waitemata) 2, L. Hill (Canterbury) 3. The only competitors. A close race throughout. Won by 2yds, half a yard between second and third. Time smin 58 3-ssee. The 440yds. Flying Squadron race was won by Canterbury, with Auckland second. In the final of the water polo Canterbury beat Wellington by two goals to nil. CRICKET. THE AMERICAN TOUR. [By Electric Telegraph- Copyright] [United Press Association.] Sydney, February 23. The proposal to send a cricket team to America has been dropped. Mr Diamond received a cable message from Mr Benjamin, flic American promoter for whom he was acting, to, cancel all arrangements.
