SWIMMING CARNIVAL.
A SIGNAL SUCCESS. There was “standing room only” verv soon after the gate of the bath >j was opened last night for the Strut- .1 ford Swimming Club’s carnival. Ibe weather was line and mild, and this, no doubt, accounted in some degree for the big “bouse”—probably the biggest in the history of the Club. Tire sport provided was good, and the interest displayed by tire spectators was evidenced by the animated “barracking” in connection with almost every heat,. Over thirty visitors came from Hawera by motor lorry, the number including lady and men swimmers, a polo team and a team of “rooters,” whose vocal per-, formances on “the bank” formed quite an item of the programme. The Stratford “rooters” were not so well organised as the visitors, but were none the less loud and hearty. Many . of the officers of the Club were acting in their positions for the first time, but all showed a good grasp of their duties, and worked really hard. The lighting was excellent, and a word of praise is due "in this* connection to Mr W. J. Newton and the Electrical Supply Co. for much Work done and material loaned Vgrfitife. Tho great crowd., which was gathered together makes'it fitting to suggest tljat the School Committee should consider the erection of more seating accominodd-
»PW' . , . ii , i , k As usual the bovs’ races were well filled, 1 and created much interest. The same remark applies to the girls’ races. The ladies also turned out in force, the fields including quite a large "contingent from Hawera and Inglewood. The ladies showed good form, and if fields of the size of last night’s, could be guaranteed, the Club should hfj jatyqj tf] prpyide.pporo races,>for them.
The “general splash” item greatly enjoyed by .participants, and it was hardly less enjoyable to the spectators. ■ . Stratford upheld its reputation at water polo (gained in one game at Inglewood) by keeping Haw era off their goal posts, the visitors only scoring two goals to the home team’s nil. The game was also entertaining and amusing to the spectators. An orchestra consisting of Mrs Penn and Messrs Cottier, Penn, Grubb, O’Leary, McAllister, Wilson and Bnrmester rendered a number of enjoyable items.
Light refreshments were provided for competitors, and, as usual, were much appreciated.
After the carnival the visitors were entertained at supper by the local Club, and the gathering finally concluded about midnight. Details of the racing are as fol-
