o SWIMMING. TUESDAY’S CARNIVAL. Swimmers are reminded that entries for the Stratford Club’s carnival on Tuesday next close this evening. HANDICAP CHAMPION CUP. The heats of the 75yds distance were swum last night. In conformity with the resolution passed at Tuesday night’s meeting of the committee, the competitors appeared in nil! costume, and a few ladies availed themselves of the 1 opportunity to view the sport. Following are debails:—First Heat: E. H. Kivell (scr.) 1, B. V. Kivell (6sec) 2. Also stailed: Rutherford (6sec) and Oxley (16sec). Rntherfurd showed that lie s a fair swimemr, but lie will do no good till he is put further out. Time, 37 4-ssec. Second Heat: C. M. Kivell (2Sec)_l, Kelly (12sec) 2. Also started; Whittington (U sed and Spratt fl3sec). Won very easily. Time, 'fiSsec, Third Heat; W. Kivell (7sec) 1, C. L. Kivell f9sec) 2. Also started: N. Kivell (7soc). The first map put up a good tight on the last part of the journey home. Time, 66 l-ssec. The semi-finals will he swum this evening, and the final at the carnival in Tuesday next. BOXING. In the contest at New Plymouth last night for the professional middleweight championship between Denny Murphy, of Wellington, holder of the welter and middle-weight championships of the Dominion, and Barney Ireland, of Waipawa, there was a sensational ending. The News states: The fifth round had barely begun when Murphy advanced to the ropes and declared that. both his hands were “gone.” “1 will leave it to the doctor | to decide,” he said, and Referee Tim Tracey had no option but to place his hand on Ireland’s shoulder and proclaim him the winner. A small section of the crowd stood on its hind legs and raised a feeble boot, but any doubts that may have been in the minds of the “fight fans” wore immediately set at rest when the Association’s honorary surgeon, Dr. E. A. Walker, examined Murphy’s hands ami and announced to the crowd that both hands were badly injured. It was bad hick for the ex-champion, and this mishap will keep him out of the ring for several months. His engagements in Australia will have to be forfeited, and the much-coveted title goes over | bo Ireland. j
