SMALLPOX IN SYDNEY.

I.jd* Eleoxbio Tblbgkai'H—Coi'ymghtJ (.United Press Association. J Sydney, February 8. There are indications of the smallpox reviving. There were three cases ;it the week-end, and a disquieting feature is that they were distributed through Strathiield, North Sydney and i I'ensluust. A DESTRUCTIVE FiRE. Sydney, February S- | A destructive lire completely destioyed a big timber yard in the city. I'l he origin of the fire is a mystery. The watchman made the rounds short!ly before tlje outbreak, and everything, apparently, was right. The possibility of spontaneous combustion is discussed. Though the lire brigades arrived !|uiekly, the water supply, for a time, was poor. Within half-an-hour the whole yards were abla/.e, the heat being so intense that the firemen were unnble to fight the flames at elose;quarters, and confined their efforts to preventing a spread to adjoining [premises. The inmates of houses across the street made a hurried exit, 'lightly clad. The houses were scorched, but the furniture was saved. The I horses were saved just before the | flames caught the stables. The heat ;' kept the groat crowds assembled at a 'safe distance. Only a small shed and la few stacks of timber were saved. The 'buildings and timber were insured for C 41,155. Arrangements have been made to cany on the business at branch works. Many linns also offered assistance, and some have been accepted.
