The police, without consulting the Austro-Hungarian consulate, expelled Kienast, correspondent of the Neuo Freie Presse, for sending certain telegrams. When the steamer arrived at Smyrna. Kienast was liberated owing to a strong Austrian protest. Kienast returns, to Constantinople. The incident created a bad impression in view of the Porte's recent assurances that it would prevent the police's infraction of the treaties.
