SINKING OF THE CAMBEWARRA.

The steamer Cambewarra, 450 tons, bound from Rotterdam to Sydney, struck a reef 114 miles from Fremantle and sank. The mate and live men left to bring assistance and have not been heard of since. The rest of the crew landed .safely. The vessel was purchased by the New South Wales Government, and fitted with up-to-date appliances for the carrying of metal. She was valued at £20,000.
THE CREW’S NARROW ESCAPE.
(Received 10.15 a.m.) Fremantle, February 6. After remaining on the reef for some time the Cambewarra backed off There are two large holes in her bottom.
Tarpaulins were utilised to prevent the inrush of water, which gradually invaded tlfe engine room and the fires were drawn to prevent an explosion The vessel drifted aimlessly throughout the night. Her distress signals were seen a'' daylight, and.fishing boats came to her assistance.
The crew refused to leave the boat, and were removing their personal belongings when the Cambewarra suddenly lurched and sank. The crew were thrown into the sea apd were rescued in an exhausted condition.
The police have received a telegram stating that three men belonging to the mate’s missing boat have arrived at Dongarra, the remaining three being camped on the beach twenty miles away.
