The ferry boat Merael, belonging to the Balmain Ferry Company, collided with the steamer Mokau, a North Coast trader, oft' Darling Island. Twenty passengers were aboard the ferry, mostly women and children. With water rushing in through the broken

side, the Memel made for the wharf, which was hardly reached, and the passengers landed, when she sank. The prompt action of the captain and the Memel's firemen,in drawing the fires saved '2O lives.

FEROCIOUS SHARKS.

A sensation has been caused by the ferocity of sharks in tbe Parramatta River. One bit through the bottom of a sculler's pine canoe, eventually capsizing the boat. Tbe occupant had to swim 20 yards, reaching land safely, but his arms were cut by the teeth of the shark.
