The Times, in a special article comparing the Atlantic with Australasian shipping, states that more passengers leave Liverpool for New York in a week than sail to Australia, India, and the Far East, in a year. Shipowners maintain that the proportions of the Australian trade at present do not justify the employment of larger and faster vessels, because the slack season means a heavy loss in profit-earning.
