Saivver gave evidence that Cansfield and others told him in 1908 that as Lipton had lost the Malta business, lie must make strong efforts to secure contracts. Witness suggested to Mitchell, of the ' Devon ' Regiment .which was about to proceed to -Malta) to call on Minto. Lipton's got the Devons' contract, and Mitchell got £6O a year. The firm in 1910, decided to stop the Malta payments, whereupon Mitchell wrote accusing Lipton's of not keeping their promises, and of treating him shabbily. He asked for £SO as a final payment.
