Sawyer gave evidence that wh-en lie joined Linton's', Minto told him that certain payments n-ere necessary, Ijui emphasised that these payments wen 1 not bribes. Minto provided the payments, but said the firm did not recognise them. Referring to the defendant, Armstrong, witness said he appeared annoyed when told that the payments must stop, and expressed regret at having assisted Lipton's. Another firm had offered him SOU a year as against Lipton's £2O. Saivver gave evidence that Cansfield and others told him in 1908 that as Lipton had lost the Malta business, lie must make strong efforts to secure contracts. Witness suggested to Mitchell, of the ' Devon ' Regiment .which was about to proceed to -Malta) to call on Minto. Lipton's got the Devons' contract, and Mitchell got £6O a year. The firm in 1910, decided to stop the Malta payments, whereupon Mitchell wrote accusing Lipton's of not keeping their promises, and of treating him shabbily. He asked for £SO as a final payment. Witness stated that two former employees of Lipton's threatened to expose the firm.
