THE SEASIDE PICNIC.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Stratford’s annual seaside picnic was held yesterday, the locale being the East End beach at New Plymouth. The two excursion trains left Stratford with about two thousand persons on board, and the ordinary morning train also carried a good number. Mr H. Kivell, caretaker of the school, had gone up on tlie evening previous and had arrangements well in hand for the supply of hot water. Children and adults enjoyed themselves to the full in the 'sea and in the Henui River. The committee in charge of the reserve has made a great many improvements, and the picnickers had the benefit of donkey-ride, “ocean-waves,” swings, and a boat on the river. In the afternoon the New Plymouth branch of the Royal Life-Saving Society gave an exhibition on the beach, help being rendered by several Stratford swimmers. Dancing was indulged in (in the pavilion, despite the heat. All present speak highly of the courtesy of the re- I serve committee’s officials, who die everything to make the stay of the | visitors pleasant. In the morning 1 'there was a slight shower of rain, but j the weather afterwards kept fine until j J the Stratford people entrained fov j jhome. On the voyage homo, however, | heavy rain set in, and it is probable that the majority of the picknickers finished their day’s outing by arriving home in a drenched condition. How- ■ ever, the happy day spent at the aaa- | side would compensate for much.
