BOWLING.
THE TARANAKI TOURNAMENT.
Ideal weather was experienced for the opening day’s play of the ninth annual Taranaki tournament, which commenced at the New Plymouth and Fitzroy greens yesterday. Of the 37 rinks that had nominated, there was only one defection, Armitage’s (Manaiaj rink having withdrawn. There is thus a bye in each of the four sections.
Before commencing play, all the bowlers assembled on the New Plymouth green, where they were briefly welcomed by Mr W. J. Penn, the president of the centre.
In section A in the first round on the New Plymouth grefiiV, Dingle’s rink (E. Jackson, Bickerton, Ji Brake, 11. Dingle) were beaten 19—14 by Fookes (New Plymouth). In the second round they beat S. Wyllie (Waitara) 22—15. and had a bye in the third. In section C on the New Plymouth green Smart’s rink (S. Porritt, J. McMillan, N. J. King, G. Smart) were successful in the first round, beating H. Smart (New Plymouth) 19—15. In the second round they went under to F, Juli&n (Pihama), 19—16, and in the third round triumphed over A: Billiot (West End) by a point (23 —22), in the 22nd head after a tie.
In D. Section on the Fitzroy green, Morison’s rink (C. Martin, J. Masters, G. Sangster, R. McK. Morison) beat W. H. Hawkins (New Plymouth) 19— 16. In the second round they went under to F. Mason (Pihama) 28—13, and in the third round they defeated C. Curtis (West End) 30—15. The following shows the positions of the teams at the end of the first day’s play:— SECTION A.

THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM.

Tire Auckland bowlin’g team which toured Australia in 1908, and the Auckland se'ctioh of the “All White” team of 1906, to-day provided the players in a friendly seven-rinks’ match of 2o he'a'di against the Australian howling team which landed in Auckland on Sunday. The games resulted in a win for the Aucklanders hy 185 to 150. The first -of the two test matches against Australia will be played to-morrow.
