Miss MacLeod, the oldest British resident in Italy, died recently at her residence, the Villa del Pino, near Florence. She was borK in. 1815, just before the battle of ‘Waterloo, and knew Byron and'tbe"■Brownings.

It is with regret (states the Otago Daily Times) we chronicle tile death of Mrs Begg, widow of "the late'Mr Charles Begg, founder of the firm of Messrs Charles Begg and Co (Ltd.). The deceased lady arViVec| in Dunedin with her late husband and two'daughters in the. ship Robert Henderson in October, 1861. ' After the death of Mr Begg in 1874 v Mrs Begg, in conjunction with the late Mr John Reid and Mr C. M‘Kon/,ie Gordon, as trustees carried on the business until it was formed into a limited liability company, with Mr Alex. Begg as managing director, and Mr Charles Begg as manager. The late Mrs Begg took” an active part in the management of the business for many years, and until the last the kindly interest taken by her in the members of the staff clearly demonstrated her sterling worth and disposition. During her life in Dunedin Mrs Begg has been associated with church work, displaying a keen interest in the various associations connected with ( First Church. She was one of the few who sat under the ministrations of the late Dr. Thomas Burns, in the original First Church, which wits situated where the warehouse of Messrs Snrgood, Son and Fwen now stands. A very large circle of friends will mourn her decease, for she was one of the “mothers in Israel,” and tier influence for good will live after her. Besides her sons, Messrs Alex, and Charles Begg, Mrs Begg l(#e.s four daughters.
