Caton Woodville, the artist, in reminiscences, relates that when painting the late King 'Edward, he asked His Majesty if there would be a war with South Africa. “There will be nothing of the kind,” he said, “all will fizzle out; if a war should break out, 50,000 men will go over the whole of South Africa like the proverbial steam roller.”
Woodville replied; “It might not be quite so easy, considering Kruger has bought 60,000 Mausers and sufficient ammunition for two years, besides big guns and Maxims. King Edward was astounded, and the information was sent to the War Office, where the authorities for the first time learnt the truth concerning the Boer armament. Within three months war did break out.
