y The death is reported by cable of Colonel Vernon, late Government architect at ’Darlihghurst, New South Wales.

Mr A. F. Wilding, tennis champion, has become a Continental director to the Motor Tyre Company, states a Paris cablegram.

Mr A. W. Gillies, Mayor of Hawera, has not been in good health for some tim& past, and will probably make a visit to England shortly in company with Mrs Gililes.

The friends of Messrs R. 11. and T. White, of this town, wY-l regret to learn of the death of thair mother, Mrs Partridge, which occurred at her son’s residence to-day. The inter ment takes place on Wednesday.

Mr R. H. Campbell,v-of the Empire Hotel, is at present confined to his room through illness. The attack was a serious one and his condition gave his friends some anxiety, but Mr Campbell is now making good though slow progress towards recovery.

Lord Strathcona, Canadian Riga Commissioner in London, is, states a cable message, prostrated, and great anxiety is felt regarding his condition. He is in his 91th year. A message today states that Lord Strathcona’s conedition is unchanged.

Mr Thomas R, Mounsey has "been elected unopposed to the vacancy in the Strathpioro Riding of the Whangamomoua County Council, caused by the resignation of Cr. Diggins. Mr Mounsey’s was the only nomination received.

Rev. F. W. Dunlop, D.D., minister of the Glebe Presbyterian Church, Glebe-road, and one of the leading clergymen of New South Wales (states the Sydney Daily Telegraph), has accepted the position of chair of mental and moral science in Otago University, * New Zealand, and will probably leave for his new sphere of duty about February 21 next. Dr. Dunlop came from New Zealand, succeeding the late Dr. Clouston. During his association with the Glebe Church, he has mad© many friends. He was appointed one of the New Testament lecturers by the Theo-logical-hall committee, but his acceptance of the Otago professorship will prevent h,im retaining that appointment.
