The chief of the Seismologioal Department lias arrived at Kagoshima, rle believes , the eruption ot Sakurashnna was due to the activities of the volcano Higashia, Kirishima, on which the legend says, the Emperor’s divine ancestors descended from Heaven.

In vestigation proves that the death roll was exaggerated. The majority of the islanders were rescued. Not one of- the thirty thousand houses round Kagoshima Bay' retains its shape. There is great scarcity of food. Many women have become insane through being separated from or by the Joss, of their families. Thirty-three persons were found alive huddled in a cave at Sakurashima, and were rescued. The eruption changed the entire shape of the island.
