Burnt Out.
EARLY MORNING FIRE.
IN CORDELIA STREET.
The firebcll was rung about half-past ; two this morning, the cause being a fire in the residence in Cordelia Street North of Mr J. Crofts, who is at present absent in Christchurch on holiday. Mrs Crofts was awakened by flames beating down towards her from the ' ceiling of the bedroom, and with some difficulty she escaped from the building and removed her six children. When the brigade arrived the building * was a mass of flames. No water was available in Cordelia Street, and a thousand feet of hose had to be run to Pembroke Road before one lead could be played on the fire. However, as soon as the water was obtained the flames were quickly subdued, though the building was a total loss. None of the furniture or effects were saved. The building was insured for £l5O in the Atlas office and the furniture for £IOO in the State office. Mrs Crofts . and the children—all of whom are of tender years—escaped with only their night clothing, and it is understood that a sum of money in the house was also lost.
