DEFENCE.
' Speaking to a representative of; the Otago Daily Times on Friday, the| Hon. Mr Allen. Minister of Defence, said that the military tournament held in Auckland last week was an event of great importance to the Dominion, and he had been very pleased to receive from General Godloy and Colonel Heard highly satisfactory re-
ports concerning its success. “It tvas an undertaking,” said the Ministei, “that will undoubtedly do much to further the scheme in the dominion. Those who saw it have no doubt about its efficacy or about the excellent training it afforded to the cadets, and to my mind it supplies evidence mi the benefit that our military trainino- svstem has already been to the dominion. I spoke yesterday with the officer who was in charge of tae cadets. He says that their discipline was excellent, and there was not a word of complaint against a single hoy. I think this says a tremendous lot for those who have heen training the boys, and for the spirit that actuates them; and in my opinion, if this satisfactory state of affairs continues. as no' doubt it will, our scheme of training for defence pnr-
poses will not only do what we 'want it to do, but also make for a better manhood than the country could have without it.”
