London, January 8
Sir Thomas Barlow reports that 1 wentv-four cases of cancer beyond
surgical aid were admitted to the -Middlesex Hospital from June to September, 1912, and all died. Sixty- ■ ight were admitted during the saute ])eriod in 1919, and treated by means of radium. Thirty-six patients died, and tin 1 remainder had been discharged and were aide to attend to their daily duties. Such a result was unprecedented. There were one or two cases of recurrence, but Sir Thomas Harlow is hopeful that with fuller knowledge of radium recurrences will lie prevent-
He adds that if Id(K) milligrammes' :f radium were buried in a cancerous tumor it simjily withered up and disappeared. The few cells left unbilled rfterwards caused the recurrence. Time >,vas required to substantiate the remarkable results achieved, nevertheless there was no longer any doubt to the immediate effect of radium, it was a matter of urgency that the Slate should control the sources of
radium and prevent the ridiculous in(iation of prices artificially engineered. Brussels, Januarv 8.
Doctors Ronffnrt and Jacobs submitted to the Society of Gynaecology the cases of two women, whom they claim have been definitely cured of cancer in the womb by means of radium. The value of the radium applied in both •ases was £1(1.0(10.
