GEORGIAN BAY CANAL SCHEME.
Although the Canadian Government is known to he convinced that national interest will he more immediately secured by the enlargement of the Welland Canal, between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, there is good reason to believe that the construction of a waterway between Geori <rian Bay, on Lake Huron, and the St. Lawrence is also strongly favor- ; ed. The total length of the route is ' 490 miles, but natural channels, run j for about SO per cent, of the distance, the only serious excavations necessary being the small strips of land between the various lakes and rivers, if the scheme materialises —tne cost is estimated at about £25,000,000 — the distance being Fort M illiam and j the Mersey will be decreased by near- ! ly 1,000 miles, as compared with the passage from the head of Lake Superior, via Xew \ork. The Government is at present deepening one of the rivers included in the project, and js about to appoint commission of inquiry, with a view to a thorough investigation of the plans from an economic standpoint.
