AMUSEMENTS.
THE “SMART SET.” On Thursday next at. the Town Hall the “Smart Sot’’ Entertainers and Maynard Dakin will make their first appearance in Stratford, after a continuous season of eight weeks each at tlie Town Hall, Auckland, and Wellington, where this party of eight artists entertained large and appreciative, audiences during the whole of that time with contributions of music, mirth, and melody, musical gems, concerted numbers, solos, duets, burlesque, dancing sketches, and the first and original New Zealand Revue, entitled “Kia Ora,” or “Keep to the Right.” The company consist of artists who have made their mark in the musical world in the four quarters of the globe, comedians' (character, eccentric, and light), and dancers of more than ordinary ability. With the “Smart Set” combination is Mr Maynard Dakin, the very popular comedian, whose visit to Stratford (in conjunction with the English Pierrots) will be remembered by his refined and true spirit of in'nocent comedy and | extremely fine acting. Referring to the company’s recent return visit at the Garrison Hall, Dunedin, the “Times” says:—“The programme was practically a new one to any presented on the previous visit, and the large audience was ample '-proof of the popularity of this merry band of entertainers. Mr Maynard Dakin made a distinct hit with “Excellent. Exercise,” which he first presented to a Dunedin public on the occasion 'of his original appearance here some I time ago with the English Pierrots. He had to respond to a triple enertre. fin Miss Georgie Martin the company .have a comedienne of undoubted jability, and the lady vocalists—Miss- , Gwyenneth Evans and Mis Mona [Thomas— are artists of , more than average merit. Mr Ernest Parke,s ! got a double recall for his baritone contributions. His main number was “Chorus Gentlemen” in which ho had the . assistance of Messrs George and Dakin. These gentlerpon lent invaluable assistance throughout the evening in the concerted numbers. Pr.it the performer who scored the greatest success was Mr Edward Elliott, who with the aid of “Sunshine •lames,” gave a clever ventriloquist “turn.” Mr Edgar Hulland, besides acting as accompanist, contributed a pianoforte solo.” The management are still adhering to the popular prices of admission, and seats may be reserved at Grubb’s without any extra charge.

Ruth Watson admires him for liisj bravery, During a cattle round up Wilson respites Ruth when .she is attacked ny an outlaw steer and becomes a hero. Just then he is recognised' by a sheriff and is arrested. He manages to escape, and comes across a shepherd and takes his revolver and horse. He starts to ride but of the country, still hunted. His foot gets caught in the hickory stirrup and hois dragged across the prairie. Eventually his hoot comes off and he is left to the mercy of his pursuers. On recovering consciousness, he finds himself a prisoner once more, hut before ho is incarcerated to serve out his term, ho sees Ruth and tells her that he will come to her again with a sound heart and clean hands. The world’s famous picture (Les Miserables), 8000 feet in length, will he screened on January 23rd and 24th.
