Lord Chelmsford, in a letter dealing with evening continuation schools, complains bitterly of the employers’ apathy and hostility. Of 1540 cases investigated, only nine boys worked 48 hours weekly; 27G worked 58 hours, and the rest between sixty and Seventy hours. At the teachers’ conference with members of the Board of London University, it was stated that evening educational work was comparatively unprofitable. If the education of lads who left school was to be continued by evening Study, their hours of, labor in the day-time must be considerably reduced.
