CITY BUILDING.
Speaking at a function at Sydney tiu> other day, Governor Adams described him sol I as a merchant, an amateur banker, and three times Governor of Colorado. Speaking of what he nad seen in Australia, he said: “J am as sincere as the smile of a child or tire wag of a dog’s tail, hut I like your country. I. am glad 1 came. A\ hen i knock at Heaven’s gates and St. Peter opens the door, he is sure to ask are what 1 know. .How emHarassing it would lie if 1 could give him no irst-hand information as to the ninth wonder of the world—Sydney Bailor?” Naturally there was wild aprlause. Governor Adams proceeded
~o say that a great city must rise •.round that fine harbor, and added, “Nature does much, hut it expects also hat man shall do his part. It is true that God helps those who help themselves. God doesn’t like a silent partner. Yon must vise that which is given you to use: Adit will find that ordinary cities are inhabited by ordin-
iry men, and great cities by great
men of genius and enterprise —men .ueh as yon are here. A on are a company of builders. Aon have the enterprise. Here you have energy hacking pi Nature, and that Combination is as invincible as the armies of Gideon.
You say yon want a city of one million men. That achievement is not far away, hut you must remember that aities of a million are not provincial. They are not local. A city of that kind is a national institution. Men who build these great cities must have great thoughts.”
