The Government Meteorologist (Rev D. C. Bates) telegraphed this afternoon as follows: The indications are for freshening northerly strong w inds to gale. Expect dull weather with much mist and fog

in parts. The weather appears likely to be cloudy and unsettled, with rain following. Barometer falling.

There was a very prolonged earthquake, with an unpleasant jar in the middle, about 2.80 this morning says the Wednesday’s “Taranaki Herald.” Tiie Waitara “Mail” says: There was quite a severe shock of earthquake in the small hours this morning. It is said to have been more severe than the shock experienced here in August, 1912.
