"To Rhodes's Memory!"
A SUGGESTED NEW STATE.
FROM THE CONGO TO MAFEKINC.
RENEWING COMPANY’S CHARTER
,Bt Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.! (Received 9.10 a.m.) Capetown, December 2d. Sir Starr .Jameson, speaking at Salisbury, said tho Crown’s annexation of
Rhodesia was easy, but confiscation aas impossible. The Chartered Company in the event of annexation, would die a petition of rights and recover its property. The company would, how-
ever, do its best to allay soreness. He described the political situation as electrical, and argued that in the event of sudden prosperity in Rhodesia after the coming renewal of the charter, responsible government would become' inevitable. The only alternative to the charter was absorption in the Union. (Loud dissent). The Union, he said, ought to settle its internal troubles before inviting Rhodesia to join, -
A sensation was caused in the meeting by the reading of Mr L. V. Harcourt’s opinion. Sir S. Jameson hinted at the possibility of a great telf-governing State from the Congo to Matching, including northern and southern Rhodesia and Bechuanaland, thus creating a fitting movement to Rhodes’ memory.
A QUESTION OF CHOICE
THE COMPANY OR THE UNION.
(Received 8.5 a.m.)
Sir Starr Jameson emphasised thai Rhodesia must choose between the Chartered Company and the Un'oii. He quoted -Mr Harcourt’s opinion that lifferences between elected , merabrs md the Council would inevitably uiise the question of entry into the Cmon.
