Their Majesties King George and Queen Mary will spend Christmas at Sandringham, states a Times-Sydney Sun cablegram. The death is announced at Invercargill of Mr John Walker. He arrived in Invercargill in 1873, and in 1893 established' the Victoria Iron Foundry. One of his sons (Mr T. W. Walker) is Town Clerk of Invercargill. The Hon. George FowWs is leaving Auckland in a few weeks on a business and pleasure trip to the Old Country and the Continent, which will extend over eight months. Mr Fowlds ivill be accompanied by Miss May Fowlds, TJie appointment of Superintendent X, Kiely to take charge of the. Auckland police, district, in place of Superintendent A. J. Mitchell, is announced. Superintendent Kiely has been in charge at Auckland practically since the beginning of the strike. Mr Thomas Gresham, for many years city coroner, has announced that he will be a candidate for the Auckland West seat at the next Parliamentary election. Mr Gresham states that he will continue to help the .workers and will direct his energies towards advancing the, Liberal Party under the leadership of Sir Joseph Ward.
Sir James Dewar, the first man to obtain liquid and solid hydrogen, recently celebrated his seventy-first birthday. He was also the co-inventor of cordite, the smokeless powder, and has taken a lifelong interest in chemical research. Sir .lames Mills announced yesterday morning, at the statutory meeting 01 shareholders of the Union Company, that, as it will he necessary for him,to proceed to England early in the year, he proposes to relinquish the position of managing director at the end of December. He also announced that Mr Holdsworth had been appointed managing director as from January 1. Sir James will continue to occupy a seat on the board and retain the chairmanship for the present. The bride-elect of Mr Albt. Ensell, a professional weight-lifter and t.he son of a Birmingham licensed victualler. turns the scale at 40st 31b, although she is only 11) years old. Her name is Nellie Lambert, and she is a great grand-daughter of Mr Daniel Lambert, whose weight was -52st 111 b. She has a waist line of 7ft 4in, while her arm is 26in in circumference. The prospective bridegroom weighs between list and lost, and stands 6ft high.
