AMUSEMENTS.
AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL. The white pine blocks to be used at the Axemen's Carnival, totalling over -'3UU have just arrived in Eltham. Mr Volzke, who has had the contract for procuring them, states that they are all first class timber and as good a lot as ever used at Eltham. The Committee have also secured four 18inch blocks of Kavvaka, the fastest timber in Now Zealand. Although never before used in Eltham, they are making arrangements with Pretty, Pech, Miley and Shewry to chop these blocks with a view of putting up a world's record. This event will take place on the second day. Sideshowmen have already put in an apperance, every . foot of available space having been taken up. "iljere will be ample amusement in this form for both young and old. Those who cannot ride the buckjumpers will be able to ride the horses on the merry-go-round, which will be on the grounds. <■
BERNARD'S PICTURES. To-night's change of pictures will include a great variety of tire .vorkl's leading makers. The principal feature film is entitled "The Vampire of the Desert," and is stated to be most nerve-thrilling. The supporting pictures are of great calibre. "Captured by Strategy," is a real sensatioinl photo-play by the Kalem Co. of America. Tom Marvin befriends Bill, a tramp, and gains his everlasting friendship. Later, Tom is refused the hand of Gladys Richmond by her father. The lovers, are heart broken. Richmond sells his timber land, and resolves to make a trip to the city by boat to deposit the money. The'transaction is witnessed by several tramps, who plot to waylay Richmond. Tom, who has overheard the plans, is ma< <? a prisoner. Bill, one of the tramps, becomes conscience-stricken, and lib-n----ates him. By a strange turn of fate, the crooks are temporarily frustrated, but follow Richmond and board the vessel. After a hard ride Tom arrives at the landing only to find that the boat has gone. He rides along the bank until ho reaches a pier where a dredge is working and induces the foreman to assist him in his, desperate effort to board the boat. Jfe. bursts into the colonel's state-room in time to foil the crooks and assist in their capture. On Xmas night a splendid biblical programme will' be, screened at 8.3 p, including "The Life of Moses.". , '
