Pearce, Conimonwealth Minister of Defence, considers 1 the department extravagantly adminisitered, and foreshadows economics. He said he noticed considerable ratification | by"* the New Zealand Minister, of .Defence (the Hon. J. Alien), who declares himself dissatisfied with-the departure from the 1909 agreement. To 'those who take a serious view of the Pacific question, it must be pleasing that Xew Zealand is apparently anxi- • otis that its effort in the direction of naval defence should take place a little nearer its own shores.
