The Big Central Show
HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL.
NOTES FROM YESTERDAY. The attendance of the public yesterday was highly satisfactory, the gate takings being about £5 over those for the first day last year.
A highly interesting and new feature of the day was the collie dog trials worked within the ring. Three hardy mixed sheep were used in each, and the competitors, clog and man, had their work cut out in the driving and yarding trial set them;
There are not many entries in the photography class, hut some of the landscapes exhibited are veritable works of art.
Mr Boyd, of Toko Hoad, continued his record of success with Thelmaid, who was placed first in the class for mare in foal or with foal at foot. Thelmaid won two firsts at Wanganui and one first at Hawera, and the fact that three judges have approved her indicates pretty clearly what a good mare she is. Mr Johnson, the judge, says the fox terriers on exhibition are a great improvement over previous shows. The winning Irish terrier, he said, was as good an animal as could be seen anywhere.
TO-DAY’S OUTLOOK. GLORIOUS WEATHER. BIG CROWDS.
The morning! broke fair and gave promise of a highly successful second day, and the town early took on a very busy aspect, the trend of all traf.'ic, of course, being towards Flint Road. On the ground a big crowd prickly gathered, a noticeable feature being the large proportion of district .•esidonts and visitors from further .Raid.
The Show operations re-commenced with full vigor. The ring events had the attention of a good crowd, but there were not wanting, also, a big section of the more studious, who subjected the penned cattle' to, scrutiny ,mdcriticism. ' In the grade or ; crossbred section, where Mr Montcfiorc’s cow was placed first; a protest was entered, it be-' ing alleged that the cow, had been removed from the grounds during the night, such being contrarv to the 7 • * . »» * rules.
Stewart and Lansperg Won the points prize in the open poultry competition, S. Reader gaining the points prize for local. The poultry did not come up to last year’s entries, but the birds wore far ahead in quality.
The Borough water-qart has in the past been- much in- the style of the proverbial policeman—never on hand alien wanted. But this morning the cart was in evidence by its presence in Broadway North, and its effect on the road was much appreciated by the 41 rge numbers who journeyed to
grounds by gig and motor. Apropos; Another highly desirable innovation was. the stationing of a policeman at the turn into Flint Road, Sergeant McNoely doing this duty in the morning. JUDGES’ OPINIONS. The Cun Dogs. Mr Soler, who judged the gun dogs, expressed satisfaction with the show made. The winning pointer dog, he said, was one of the best doing the rounds of the shows. Some of the young pointers showed excellent promise. The pointer bitches were not numerous, but were of excellent quality. The winning bitch was of good quality, though a trifle small. The English setters contained some fine specimens, notably Mr T. Kirkwood’s bitch, which was one of the best in the country, and could bold her own in the very best of company. AMONG THE HENS.
The judge, Mr S. Johnson, Palmerston, was enthusiastic about the show of poultry, saying that the section was improving every year. The present show of poultry was easily the best yet seen at the show. For the time of the year the majority of the exhibits were shown in very nice condition. Perhaps the best classes were the White Pocks and the American White Leghorns. There were a few Fnglisji Leghorns, but some were not shown in very good order. There were very nice birds in the Wyandotte hen class, and the winner of first and special was an exceptionally fine bird. The class of the Brown Leghorn hens was a good one, though the majority were not in their best condition. The black Wyandottes were very good. The Silver Wyandottes were not a strong class, but some good golds were penned. All the barred Rocks were of excellent quality, and the winner of first ami special was of exceptional merit. The exhibit winning the prize for best colorful bird was in exceptionally fine condition considering the time of year.
