The Rugby Union will pay the fares of southern boys to Now Plymouth;, and w ill arrange for accommodation in New Plymouth. It was intended to get southern boys to New Plymouth the day before the sports.. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. , The secretary reported that he had written to the various school masters tin the district as follows:—“It has been suggested that two open events for senioivhoys be placed on the programme, of the Bayjy Scholarship ■sports this year—a 220yds flat.race and a 220yds hurdle race, the entrants to start from scratch, the winner to be Champion of the Taranaki secondary schools over these distances. I would :be glad to hear if any boys from your ■ iohool would compete. I would also be pleased, to hear if you would support the idea of an athletic competition.to he confined to the five second- j iry schools of the province. It would, j W course, he necessary to convene a j meeting of delegates from each school | ■to draw up conditions, etc. I think j the time has arrived when such a com- | petition, should bo hold and would bo j fghul to receive your answer at an early, j date. v »

Mr T. Thomas', headmaster of; 'the i Eltham, D.H.S., replied supporting the i proposal.,! ; 11 ... I‘i; |: - .{

Mr F. Tyrer, headmaster of the | Stratford D.H.S., wrp.te,: “In reply \ ho your note I wish to say that 1 think the idea of holding school championtship nveps in cpiijnectipn with , the Bayjy sptyoliarship K competitions quite a good| one, wit|v.nyliicli I am in full accord. Probably a championship ior bolth juyior and spnior boys, fpuld f t)e irrangod for. In reference to the combined school sports, my opinion is that it present such a meeting could not ho 'arranged. T&ost of the schools 'have'’ ■.ports days during the year, and if in event, open to competition to any Vji secondary, school iys .Tarjihaki were placed cm each progrum it. would, I thiplc. . tend to a greater generalj f interest in these , gatherings and bpys r sports, generally.” , Mr’.AV. 1 H. Moves,, principal of the’ New Plymouth Buys’ High School.: wrote: “I am inclined, to think it would be a difficult' thing to carry out. There is so much to’ get through in the third tend ''of 'the year that it would be difficult to fit in such a meeting. Personally I would prefer to see the same system adopted n« obtains in Auckland. Each school puts on an invitation race at its own sports meeting, and in this race two representatives from each of the schools compete., This, with' 'th’e five schools in Taranaki, would mean that there would be ten competitors in each event. Points ire awarded for first, second and third,places, and the school that scores the most points during the year is the . champion . . .1 am inclined to

think it would he a very difficult matter to hold a meeting representative of all the schools every year.” It was decided that no action be taken before next year.
