The Federals, while attempting to recapture .hiare/., were defeated. A
thousand were killed and 700 captured. The rebels’ losses wore 000 killed and 200 wounded. The Federals are retreating southward, and arc disorganised.
Sanguinary hand-to-hand lighting is proceeding. Thirty Federal volunteers were executed. It is alleged that the rebels stripped and dressed themselves in the uniforms of tlit Federals’ dead.
