Hdssett was charged at the Magi sit ate;' s Court to-day" ' (1) with 1 taking -part' in a ; ript ' in' * Tarana'ki Street^tt'Norembefr s '3rd, f2)' Witli'af-J tempting to murder Police Co s«>m?sfsioiier Cullen, and (3) -with assaulting a' constable. "The case for the Croivn \vas that, the accused was standing under a shop verandah in the vicinity of the barracks and fired at Cullen, who was. standing alongside t the .fire hose when the water was played on to the crowd. Accused went into the shop, and fired twice at the Commissioner.
A feature of -the caso was the, attitude&rbf 'a; -wiiriVss, ? -Audrew Kelly, who'eontradicted his signed .■statement made.to the police to the effect that he saw. ace used fici the §hooting.■ Kelly ■now said the, statement was written by Detective* Cas'sels",. who did -not'rertd it over to him. He could not identify Hassett as the man .who fired at Commissioner Cullen.
Another witness, a girl, who had also made a statement sto the police .■that to. the best of her belief Hasset did the shooting, now said he was not the man she had identified in the police yard. The case is proceeding.
