Planters from Solomon Islands report unrest among the natives of the group owing to gun-running and a threatened insurrection. *. Recently a number of rifles and three thousand rounds of ammunition were seized aboard a vessel at Tulgar. She was previously a Japanese craft, and was detained on suspicion of gunrunning. The captain was fined £3OO, and as the fine was not forthcoming the Government is now negotiating for the sale of the vessel. The natives are offering big prices for guns and ammunition. The headquarters of the Melanesian Mission at Cheiseul has been fortified! against a threatened attack by the na-| fives. . I
Cannibalism is still prevalent on some of the Islands. Two months ago a oouple of boys were killed and eaten at Sancristoval. The two murderers of a settler named Keller were captured and sentenced to death. According to their story the chief of the district offered shell money to the value of £1 for the head of a white man.
