Sir H. Rider Haggard, discussing forestry at the Authors' Club, said that he saw things in Australia and New Zealand calculated to make the heart of a forester bleed. He instanced the destruction of the kauri and the pine in New Zealand. Everywhere timber was being burned, destroyed and wasted. Unless the world checked this waste of timber in the next half-cen-tury there would be a timber famine.
