THE MAYFIELD MURDER.
CONDITION OF THE PRISONER. [Per Press Association.] Christchurch, Xovember 7. Tt was rumored in town to-day that Biddle, who is in gaol awaiting trial for the murder of Mrs Lilley, at Mayfield, was at the point of death. Inquiries made at the Lyttelton Gaol this afternoon proved that there was no grounds for the rumor. Biddle was seen in the exercise yard. He seemed to have little control of his legs land arms, and was being assisted by jtwo other prisoners. The gaoler stated [that Biddle was gaining strength every 'day, and had greatly improved in health since he-'jiad been sent to the [gaol. "He had just been seen by the 'gaol surgeon, who had reported that he was doing well. Biddle is still* suffering from the effects of the poisons taken by him in the Hinds riverbed. The poison is, however, gradually working out of his system, and he is eating well.
