NEGRO MINSTREL’S EXPLOITS

[Per Press Association. J Auckland, November 6

Charged with committing two burglaries at Mercer, and also with obtaining money from an Auckland tradesman witii intend to defraud, a colored man, named Artjhie Win. Taylor, was brought before the Police Court to-day. It was alleged by the prosecution that accused, who had but recently arrived in the country as a member of a company of minstrels, started operations in Auckland on October 16. According to evidence, he .went to a hairdresser and represented himself as a tailoring firm’s traveller. Accused was stated to have induced the hairdresser tc pay £1 deposit for a suit, leaving : balance. He never returned with the suit, and the hairdresser came to the conclusion that he had been victimised Accused, it was alleged, had no connection with any tailoring firm. Ac cased, it was further alleged, was next heard of at Mercer several days later. A Maori, living in a five-room-ed house near that town, locked up tin dwelling on October 27, prior to goin flint o isolation, ,during the smallpox scare. Five days later he revisitec the house and found that it had beer broken into and jewellery to the tota’ value of £46 7s 6d was missing. A

whare, belonging to another isolated Maori, was also broken into and about £2 worth of goods stolen. In close prPximity to the whare was found a receipt-book, and it was alleged tha the book .was identical' with the oiv used by accused when ho obtained tlr £1 deposit from tiie hairdresser. Ac ensed was suhspqtlentlv found in Auckland pawning some of the stolen jewel lei\. A\hei} taxed with having committed the burglary, he ,threw tin blame on to a friend of his. Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
