Mrs Montefiore, managing a deportation scheme, collected fifty boys and girls in Dublin and bathed and dressed them in new clothes. The mothers followed them to the baths and notified the priests. The latter in impassioned tones protested against the children being sent to atheistic and socialistic homes in England.' Mrs Rand, daughter of a former American Minister in' Portugal, has been remanded on a charge of attempted abductions from Dublin. Mrs Montefiore asked that the charge be transferred to herself, as she was responsible.

The Magistrate -declined and advised Mrs Montefiore to abandon the movement. He said that however good her motive, ill-feeling 'was being aroused. Mrs M&tffenore, replying to' Archbishop Walsh, declared that she was anxious to safeguard the children's religion, and was endeavouring to send them to Catholic-schools and homes.
