STRATFORD TENNIS CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Stratford Lawn Tennis Club was bold at the Borough Council Chambers last night, there being a good attendance of members' Mr W. H. H. Young presided. ANNUAL REPORT. The following report was adopted: It gives your committee groat pleasure to submit to you the 19th annual report and balance-sheet. Finance:— The season was commenced with a bank overdraft of £l2l 18s(£21 18s No 1) working account, and £IOO, No. 2 account, and tho balance sheet shows a loss on the year’s work of £6 11s 6d. This is easily accounted for by reason of the expense the club has borne in the formation of a fourth court, which has been badly needed in the past, and which if allowed would show a profit on year’s work of £4 os 4d, and the extra care of the courts during the winter months. There still remains a ‘little wont to lie done, but. this balance-sheet will not he. affected thereby. The subscriptions for the year totalled £7l 18s Cxi, which constitutes a record for the club. In all 1,5 new members were elected during’the season, while five resigned. Matches!—A large number of matches were played by both “A" and “B” teams, and our representatives are to be congratulated for winning the majority of matches. The keenness of members to gain places in teams was very marked, and consequently a vast number of ladder matches were played and very keenly contested. The men’s championship was won by Mr Vernon Crawshaw, while Mr R. B. Anderson was for the third time in succession runner up. The ladies’ championship .was won by Miss E. Mackay (a new member), Miss D. Mackay being runnerlUp. Ground.—At the commencement of the season the club decided that, providing the necessary finance could be arranged, new courts be formed in Victoria Park. The Borough Council was approached and kindly consented to the proposition. At a later date, however, the majority of members thought it advisable to remain on the club’s grounds, and your committee, at a subseqennt meeting, decided accordingly. The courts suffered 'considerably during the season, due, no doubt, to the amount of play thereon. During the winter they have received much attention, and will be in excellent order at the commeneemnt of the’coming season. Your committee decided : to lay' down a fourth court, and the work has been completed. Unforfrinately the new court has suffered 'sd'mewlifit .through the ;ba-<,l weather’’‘shbrriy ’ after : its" formation, find it xriay not be''ready 1 for use until about thb ! middle’of'the season. .TJie club has been put to'Some expense in topping trees on the eastern and western sides of the ground and also in renewing 1 ’Wlre-ririttilig." •Balls—“Ayres” balls were used during the season and proved very satisfactory. They wfere retailed to members at 3s per pair, which ■ lis -very. little -, fibove cost price. ’ Con&effuentlyr the . club has made a : loss,] as a! i large miumber of balls wore used 'for matches.. A gross of these halls have’ been ordered for the coming season* and are expected to arrive before the end of October. Social.—A dance was held on the sth June and proved a great success. The ladies are to be thanked and congratulated for the manner in which they carried out arrangements, and thanks are also due to Mr Robert Spence for his donation of claret cup to the dance committee. Before ••he commencement of next season the club will lose Mi's Mackay and her daughters, who arc about to take up their residence in Hamilton; and your committee is desirous of placing on its appreciation of the services rendered iby those ladies, and wishes them every success and happiness for the future. In conclusion, your committee is desirous of passing a vote of thanks to the lady iriembers of the club for supplying afternoon tea during the season and for entertaining the visiting clubs and friends. Crawshaw ; committee, Dr. Paget and Messrs Rutherfurd, -Russell, ’ Crawshaw, and Wilson ; secretary and treasurer, Mr C Wright; auditor, Mr A. Coleman. NEW MEMBERS. Six new members were elected.
