Official figures show that 431 are dead or missing. The disaster has been a hideous gap in the life of Senghenydd. One chape! lost three fifths of its male members, and in one household eight out ol nine are gone. In another, one boy is left in a household of eleven. Rescue teams front every Welsh coal held are engaged trying to get round the lire to the isolated district when the men are entombed. The rescuers are working in an atmosphere of extreme peril. The mine is full of ga: and afterdamp, and there is grave danger of a further explosion. It will probably take months to recover the victims. The King sent £SOO to the relief fund. A Mansion House fund has been opened. . Over 205 widows and 390 children were dependent on the missing. The woman whose husband and son are entombed gave birth to her twelfth child. THE FIRE CONTROLLED. (Received 10.5 a.m.) Loudon, October 17. The fire at Senghenydd has been mastered and the ventilation improved. There were many narrow escapes. Several of the rescuers were overcome by fumes and heat and were artificially restored.
