THE PANAMA CANAL. AN INTERESTING EVENT. [By Electric Telegrafh-^Copyrightj [United Press Association.] (Received 12.40 a.m.) Washington, October 10. President Wilson pressed an electric button at White House and exploded a huge charge of dynamite under the ( Gamboa dyke, 4000 miles distant, thus allowing the waters of Gatun Lake tc flow into the Culebra Cut. Light draught vessels are now able to navigate the greater part of the Canal. Steam dredges have started work deepening the channel. Pacific Coast cities celebrated the blowing-up of the dyke bells, sirens, whistles, and stoppages of the car services.

The waters of the Pacific and Atlantic are not actually united yet, as the Culebra Cut is 85 feet over sea level, but the waters of Gatun Lake extend from Pedro in the Iguel Locks to Gatuu Locks, approximately two-third’s of the entire length of the Canal.
