Now, Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., Stratford Branch, report as follows: — On Tuesday, 23rd inst., we held our usual fortnightly sale in, our Stratford yards, when we yarded 530 head store cattle and 160 head dairy stock, disposing of 292 head or store stock and 67 head of dairy stock, ,Tho prices for young cattle were slightly easier than previous We , quote as follows:—Y'earling steers 43s Gd, up to 65s 6d, yearling Shorthorn heifers 42s to 57s 6d, yearling coloured heifers oSs to 6d, 2 ,year Jjeifej-s 65s to 82s year steep §2s to 90s, young store cows 71s to 85s, fat cows 110 s jtq. 13,7,5, buljs- 1 75 s ito .90s. springing heifers i(close up) 145 s to 202 s 6d for nice quality, good dairy cows 155 sto 187 s 6d. A noticeable feature in the dairy r sales is that anything backward and lorf in condition is very much neglected. Farmers should. realisq.Hys.,) and yard only well forward apd conditioned heifers'.
We iiel(l l( pui; l |twial montjilyi sale of wool, sheepskins, hides,, .tallow,- etc.;, on Tuesday, 23rd inst., when wc had a medium catalogue. There—was a fair attendance of buyers, competition for wool being keener, and the' price for good quality stuff showed an advance of -,d per lb on last sales rates. There was also a decided advance on sheep,ski us and good fines spljf at remarkably good prices. Hides and calfskins, however, were much lower, this being, no doubt, in response to the decline in values shown in foreign markets. Crutchings, bale lots, 6|d to 7id for nice Puniwhakau wool. Fleece, and dead wool mixed in sacks from 8d to 7|d, sheepskins, fair woolled, good skins, brought very high prices, equalising from 7id to 8d per lb. We sold our sheepskins this time at per skin, which we consider an advantage, according to quality and condition of the skins. Full woolled skins 11s 9d, while for a nice lino of butcher’s skins 8s 6d was realised. Nice line well woolled good pelted skins, large spread, from Puniwhakau, 7s Gd; butchers’ lines, f woolled, farmers’ lines, 5s lid. to 6s 2d; medium skins, fair wool, good pelts, ss, 5s id, 5s 3d, os sd, 5s Gd ; other lines 4s 9d, 4s 7d, 4s sd, is Id, 4s ; for light woolled and inferior pelted skins 3s lOd, 3s 7d, 3s Gd, 3s sd, 3s 4d, 3s 3d, 3s 2d, 3s; light woolled and damaged pelted skins 2s 10d, 2s 9d, 2s Gd, 2s sd, 2s' 3d, 2s 2d ; pelts Is to Is 3d; tallow from 20s to 2s 3d per cwt; cowhides, light and slippy Gt to 7|d per lb; farmers'? lines from GiJ(I to 7d ; one fair line cowhides, but light, 7£d. Most of the hides offered were inclined to be fleshy, and were rather light to secure bigbei prices. Yearling hides from Gd to Gfci per lb, nice line; G§d to Gyd per lb; dirty and inferior yearling bides made i;;d to sijd, nice-conditioned GUI to 7d ; calfskins, fair line, light weight, but fair spread realised up to lid per lb; medium quality, but light, lUd to lOVd; medium quality from 9d to 9|, to 9Jd per ll>; slipey and inferior, cut, Gd. Gijd to 7d per lb. Nice line of •ipl to Byd.
We have put through a considerable number of paddock sales during the past week at the following rate;;: Yearling steers, in demand,, from 57s Gd for medium to 62s and up to 65s for decent Shorthorn lines; yearling heifers, ordinary colors, 55s to )4s, colored yearling heifers, well grown, 72s Gd to 92s Gd, 2 year empty heifers, not enquired for, 75s to 82s Gd ; 2 year old steers in demand, 87s to 90s; 2 year old springing heifers neglected except for good lines ; hog■el ;, not so keen an inquiry, from Ms ,„r inferior tc 16s 3d for good lines.
