On the question of Prihce Pauline's stud career many London writers rave had their say, and they appear j co be agreed that at £40,000 that i corse will pay for himself, assuming that misfortune does not overtake

him. Even then the new owper can nsuro himself against loss. Those who u’o unable to see how the purchaser s to get £IO,OOO and expenses back mt of a single horse will read what London sporting writers have to say m the subject. One of the number liscourses interestingly thus:—“Peo>le who are not familiar with the 3 s d of breeding racehorses will, rerhaps, be wondering how such a aim as £-10 000 can be justified. As v matter of fact, Mr Joel is, with ordimry luck, practically certain to get he money back by means of stud fees done,. Prince Palatine’s fee has been fixed at 400 guineas. During his first reason he will probably be allowed mly 20 mares. In his second and mbsequent seasons the number will, lowever, be increased to 40. Now, 40 nares at 400 guineas will yield 16,000 guineas. Three times that total is ’-8,000 guineas. Add the 8000 guineas •esnlting from the first season, and at he end of the fourth year the income vill amount to the comfortable sum >f 56,000 guineas. Of course this will not be clear profit. Supposing the horses’s life is insured for £50,000, here will be a premium of about 02500 per annum to pay., Even then he net return will amount to £48,000, >r just over what he has cost Mr Joel. Of course, there is interest on the noney to be allowed for, but the fifth season will square that all right, and thereafter Prince Palatine will be yielding a clear profit of at least 610,000 a year, and in the meantime the risk is a negligible, quantity.”
