ENGLISH DIALECTS.

OYEZ! OYEZ!! OYEZ!!! A VANISHING CALLING. A little emigration work brings home to one estates the London correspondent of the Sydney Daily Telegraph) how many and different are the dialects of these islands. It is only by paying the closest attention that you can talk intelligently to many of the provincial applicants for Australian citizenship. One day recently prizes went offered at Hastings for the best town criers, and some wonderful variations were given of the old English cry, "Oyez! Oyez! Oyez!" The DailyNews correspondent writes: — "Hero is what the most notable criers made of it: — "Newmarket: Oh, yes (short and sharp). "Boston: Ho yaaze! Ho yaze! He. yaaaze! "Caerphilly (S. Wales: Oo yez! Oo yez! 0000. yess! "Devizes: Hoo-0000 yes! (D.C.). "Wokingham: Oh, yes! (high and quick). "Marlborough: Oyez! Oyez! o—yea ! "Winchester: Ho yus! Ho yus! Ho yus! / "Horsham: Hi—ln'—hi! !(very long and piercing. "Canterbury: () yaay! 0 yaay! 0 5-a ay! "Folkestone: Ooooh—yesss! (most mysteriously)." The criers were in wonderful attire. a relic of the past, like their vanishing calling, and some of them had bells of great antiquity. The Canterbury bell was 250 years old, and had never been cleaned, a circumstance which to-day's Crier boasts with great pride, rncl in the rhyme competition he declared that its peal Makes you skip and makes you jump; It makes your heart go bumpetty bump.
