FOOTBALL,

A PECULIAR POSITION

[Per Press Association.] Wellington, August 27

The position regarding H. Atkinson, the Westland representative in the team to tour California, is a peculiar one. The New Zealand RugbyUnion received a letter signed “H. Atkinson,” posted at Hokitika and dated August 19th, to the effect that the writer could not make the trip. Gillespie, Wellington, was thereupon selected, taking Atkinson’s place in the team. The Now Zealand Union has now been notified by the West Coast Union that there is no truth in the statement that Atkinson has withdrawn from the team. The New Zealand Union telegraphs to-day to Atkinson explaining the receipt of the Hokitika letter, which it is assumed he did write and asking him to make a statement on the subject.
