The vessel will probably reach the Bluff on Monday' or Tuesday. An excellent return was received last season by Mr G. Townsend, Lowgarth, from his herd of thirty-eight grade Jersey Cows, eight of the animals being two-year-old heifers.', His herd averaged 2701 b of butter-fat per head for the season. This result was obtained exclusive of the milk 'used for feeding calves and for the use of the house; and the calves were fed for a month on new milk. Judgment by default was given in the following cases at the Court this morning:—J. A. Stanford v. S. J. Briscoe, £-1 15s 4d, costs 8s; W. Elder v. A. H. Cahill, £1 5s lOd, costs ss; W. Elder v. i The Borough Inspector (Mr W. Bar- ', low) is at present laid up by illness, ; and he failed to make his customary I appearance at the Court this morning. , The S.M., who apparently missed the j familiar face, asked if Mr Barlow had been injuring his health through . too early risng. Mr Fookes, who appeared in place of the inspector, said l the trouble was, he thought, of some other nature. ! There was only one charge of driving a gig without proper lights heard at the Court this morning, F. Franks being charged in respect of the evening of August 3rd. Defendant, in pleading guilty, said he had one good light—a bicycle lamp which could have been seen for half a mile. He lived three miles out of Eltham, and when passing through Etham he had never been pulled Tip for having insufficient lights. The S.M. said that he was much disposed to increase the line in ordinary cases of the kind. In the present circumstances he would inflict the light fine of os with 7s costs. ! Apparently the two-light by-law is not the only one with which residents are not familiar. W. Curd appeared at l the Court this morning and pleaded ! guilty to having on August 17th, driven two loose horses on a borough street. Ho said ho thought the prohibition against driving loose, horses applied only to the main street. A fine of 5s without costs was imposed.

A death from pellagra, the new disease reported at the Medical Conference in London, Las occurred at Westport, states a Press Association message. The patient, a lady, had been ill for ten years and the case puzzled ilie medical men. Judgment for £2 7s 3d, with costs os, was given at the Court this morning in the case of the Commissioner of Taxes v. Eva Lucy Terry. Mr Joseph McCluggago attended and stated that the defendant had not for two years been in possession of the land which was the cause of the proceedings. The S.M. said that as no notice had been given by ‘defendant that she intended to defend the suit no other course was open to him but to give judgment. , j An Auckland P.A. states that as the j sequel to the death of the man StimpI son, who died in the hospital after his removal from the Shamrock Hotel, where ho had fallen and ■ I been some days without medical at■l tendance, the police to-day arrested | Robert Mitchell, licensee of the hoek He was charged that he failed to I I supply Stimpson with the necessaries ■ 1 of life, whereby Stimpson’s life was I; endangered, an dappeared in Court and -! was remanded for a week on bail of > £250. ,1 Rating on native lands was discuss- .! ed at the Counties Association’s Con|j ferenco to-day, when the special com--1 ■ mittee appointed to consider the sub- . ject brought down the following re--1 commendations: —(l) That this Con- , ferenco re-affirm the policy to place 3 ( Natives and Europeans on the same ■d footing, as regards rating as far as is 1 practically possible; (a) That Native J Courts or Maori Land Boards be com- , pel led to supply, on reasonable notice; , from time to time the correct names of the principal owners in any blocks 3 to County Councils; (b) That section (■ 4 of the Rating Amendment Act, 1910, be amended to read: “Where ~ Native freehold land is vested in a s Maori Land Board or Public Trustee Board or Public Trustee on behalf of ] be liable for any rates thereof in excess of tho revenues received by the Bord or Public Trustee on behalf of the Natives interested in the land 1 irrespective of the source of such revenue; (2) All unpaid rates in respect of any such land shall he charged thereon in favor of tho local authorI ity that levied the rate.
