An inmate of the Pakatoa Island inebriates’ Horne was sentenced to 21 days’ imprisonment with hard labor for insubordination last week. In connection with the Kaimata tragedy, still there is nothing further to report concerning the missing man Virgin. To-day a systematic search, j by relatives of £he victims is being | made of country in the vicinity. The Sheepowners’ Union has decided (says the Press) that the union’s standing reward of £IOO for evidenceleading to the conviction of sheepstealers shall apply to cattle as well as sheep owned by any member of the union. During the Royd Garlick inquiry the Hon. Herdman and Mr Wilford had a heated exchange or two. Air Herdman : “1 am not going to have any impertinence from you” Mr M ilford; “It would be difficult .to find a man who has become so irritatingly impudent as you since you became a Minister. You have lost your head.” Seventy-six Royal Commissions inquiring into various questions have sat in New Zealand since 1902, at a cost of £92,4-15, according to a return laid on the table of the House a day or two ago. The Land Tenure Commission was first with £10,377, and the second was the enquiry into the question of Native Land Tenure with £9883.
